Create a character
When playing Hogwarts Legacy, you take on the role of a fifth-year student who is more mature than Harry Potter was when he began his schooling. This means you'll have the opportunity to learn more advanced spells and gain new abilities. However, before delving into magical training, your character's appearance and voice should be given attention.
The character creation tools in the game are intuitive, but it's important to keep in mind that while you can modify your hairstyle at the Hogsmeade hairdressers, you won't be able to change your facial features later on. Therefore, it's essential to make a thoughtful selection.
Choose your house carefully
When you first arrive at Hogwarts in the game, you'll have the opportunity to don the sorting hat and determine which house you'll belong to throughout the adventure. The four available options are Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff. The sorting hat will pose a few questions, and your answers will determine the assigned house.
The game offers some flexibility in allowing you to accept the sorting hat's choice or switch to another house if you prefer. However, it's important to note that once this section of the game is completed, you won't be able to change your house again. Your chosen house will primarily determine which house common room you'll have access to and the color schemes of the clothing items you'll come across and acquire.
The Floo Network & Revelio spell
There are various ways of travel available in Hogwarts Legacy to explore the castle and its surrounding areas. Initially, you'll need to navigate on foot, but soon you'll learn how to utilize the Floo Network for fast travel. This network consists of multiple locations scattered throughout the entire map, and once you've visited a location for the first time, it'll be unlocked for future instant travel. We recommend visiting as many Floo locations as possible, which are marked in white on the maps when locked and green when available, as you won't know where a mission will take you. By doing this, you can quickly return to a location later on.
In Hogwarts Legacy, the spell you'll likely use the most is Revelio, which reveals all important items in your vicinity. When you're stuck on a puzzle, casting this charm will give you hints about any interactable object that could help solve it. It's also handy for exploration, as it can reveal magical beast dens, Treasure Vaults, and Merlin Trials nearby. By riding your mount, you can expand Revelio's range and identify interesting locations from far away.
Give attention to the main quest in the beginning
While playing an expansive open-world game like Hogwarts Legacy, it can be tempting to wander off the designated path as soon as possible. However, it is wise to resist the urge in this game as many necessary skills and spells required for proper open-world exploration are locked until you've progressed significantly through the main storyline.
For instance, you won't unlock the ability to fly on a broom until you've completed more than a dozen crucial story chapters. Similarly, it takes a substantial amount of time to unlock the Room of Requirement, which serves as your base at Hogwarts. If you start exploring the open world too early, you'll likely encounter puzzles and dungeons that you're not yet equipped to handle, leading to frustration.
Instead of purchasing things, grow and brew them
Although it's easy to earn money in Hogwarts Legacy by rescuing and selling wild animals, it's best to brew potions and grow your own magical plants instead of buying them from vendors. This will save your galleons for more important purchases.
You can use the Herbology classroom pot and Potions classroom cauldron before setting up your own cauldrons and potting stations. Luckily, both locations have nearby fast travel points for easy access between quests.
Supplies for brewing magical elixirs can be found during exploration, but you'll need to buy seeds from the Dogweed and Deathcap shop in Hogsmeade to grow plants like Venomous Tentacula and Chinese Chomping Cabbages.
Use critical hits to your advantage
If enemies are staggered or stunned, they become susceptible to critical hits, regardless of the method used to stun them, such as lifting an enemy up with Levioso or freezing them with Glacius. Employing these techniques can result in impressive damage with beefy yellow numbers.
However, the opportunity to deal critical damage is often brief since the enemy will eventually recover, and the recovery time varies depending on the type of stun used. In some cases, it may be more effective to react with a rapid basic cast attack. Other times, it's a great chance to deliver devastating critical hits with potent spells.
